Those bishops, led by Constantine in 325AD, started the little-known religion of Christianity and effectively did away with the belief in reincarnation.
When the council came together, they had to decide which books would really be put in the Bible. How many men or women, for that matter, do you know, when alone much less together, have an easy time deciding on anything? If they were like our politicians today, they would never agree.
There is a story on how the council came to the understanding of which books would be in the Bible. It makes as much sense as any. Because they could not agree, the Bishops decided they would leave all chapters which they considered Biblical under a table. The parts of the books, which needed to be in the Bible, would magically jump onto the table over night.
With faith all things are possible. The next morning, miraculously, there were books on top of the table and thus the Bible was born.
Having reincarnation in the Bible created a small problem for those who wanted to control the masses. Church policy was built on fear. People need a certain amount of fear in their lives to appreciate living. If people didn't fear going to hell, then they would not adhere to church policy.
The policies back then were quite demanding. Tithing needed to be done to fund church and state. What better way to get to heaven than in the pursuit of giving up your worldly possessions to get there?
People who believed in reincarnation had no reason to tithe. They knew they would come back again. Making peace with their God, they lived their life without the need of church.
What did that mean to church as well as to state at the time? It was one less person to tithe to the church, which was part of state. That way of thinking might catch on and the Emperor just couldn't have that.
Besides that, a social question had to be answered. Lawlessness might come about. What is to keep people from
