My father got just a touch defensive because he thought that he had cast out a demon. Instead, he learned that it was just a very frightened man. At least he was open-minded enough to listen.
I told my father that Claude's Uncle S. T. had fought in World War II, just as my father had, and that he had come back from the war shell-shocked. Because of this, he decided not to marry his fiancé, whom he really loved. She went on to marry another man.
Claude's uncle spent his life alone pining for his lost love until one day, years later, when she came back and told him that she had never been happy and still wanted him. They planned to get back together. But after a few weeks, Claude's uncle thought it over again and explained to her that he would not be able to marry her. Still unsure of his mental state, he was afraid that he would not be a good husband. Shortly thereafter, he died.
Until he came to our home as a ghost, I had never met him. Seeing him pacing the fence outside our house and appearing very lonely, I invited him in. After I found out who he was, I told him that he was welcome in our home for as long as he liked.
His gentle nature was one of the most beautiful I had ever felt. This man I had never met while he was in an earthly body was such a comfort to me after his death.
Upon finishing the uncle's story, my father said he didn't know and that he was sorry for trying to send him back outside. I told him that he should ask the ghostly visitor first who he was before he exorcised him. That was a lesson daddy needed to learn.
Of course, the uncle knew that he had an open invitation from Claude and me to live with us. He visited with us until he decided to return to Earth in a physical body. While he stayed with us, he was one of the most conscientious guests we ever had.
On occasion, I have had a ghost appear to be frightened of me, as if I were the one haunting the house or he didn't expect to see me.
Once, quite a few ghosts had been playing around in my den for a few days. It's not unusual for them to be in my home, but at this particular time it was as if we were having a ghost convention.
Suddenly, one of them, who was wearing an unusual black hat, stuck his head through my ceiling. After jamming himself through the ceiling, up side down, all the way to his waist, he saw me below him. The look of fright on his face told me he did not expect to see me there. I was the apparition.
As quickly as he appeared, he lifted himself back through the ceiling and was gone.
This brings up another question. If they are ghosts to us, are we ghosts to them? The answer most definitely is yes. Our spirits are just a bit coarser in vibration because we are earthbound in these physical bodies. That is why, when people see ghosts, they usually find that their mouths are dry and they are very thirsty. Sometimes they will even become overheated while in a very cool area, or cold in a hot area.
Ghostly visitations affect us in different ways. As I have said, ghosts do whatever they need to do to get our attention, whether it is to teach us or to warn us. You can recognize a ghostly entity through such sensations as the hair on your neck or arms standing on end, localized chill bumps, or having someone you can't see touch you.
An area is haunted when a ghost decides to show himself in a particular place. When a human sees the ghostly entity and tells somebody else about it, they start the legend.
A tragedy didn't have to occur to cause a haunting. Humans are the ones who get the haunting ball rolling by talking about it. Ghostly encounters make for good tales, and all humans like a little gossip. Consequently, the story of the haunted house is passed from generation to generation because someone years ago might have come in contact with a passing ghostly visitor.
Ghosts do not have to stay in one place. They do so because they choose too. Sometimes when they need a break, they may even have stand-ins, just as actors in plays do.
Usually, ghosts haunt a location for educational purposes and do not mean to upset or frighten people, unless it might somehow benefit them.
Other spirits want to tell a story, and if they realize you can see them they are able to do so, either by vocally or mentally - if you asked, that is. They may stay around a few years to lend authenticity to their tale.
Haunting doesn't run on timetables, unless the apparition has decided on one. But the haunting can stop as quickly as it started. Keep in mind, though, that for ghosts, there is no such thing as time.
Anywhere a person who can see ghosts might be, there is a chance for a haunting.
