venture far from us. When it was dark, he would not move out of the campfire light, but he continued to circle the camp, apparently to protect us.
Not wanting to sleep with snakes or bugs, I made my bed on a picnic table where I felt safe. My two brothers and my father slept on the ground. Sleep came even though I was lying on an uncomfortable concrete picnic table.
In the middle of the night, I was awakened by something jabbing me in the stomach. Before I opened my eyes, I heard a snorting nose.
Having been awakened in an unfamiliar place with that kind of noise, my adrenaline was flowing. My heart was pounding, and my breath was stuck in my throat.
Here I thought I would be safe up on that table. Now I find someone is nudging me in the stomach and making all sorts of noise.
When I finally got brave enough to open my eyes and look up, I saw the most beautiful black horse I have ever seen. The white star above and between his eyes bobbed with his head, up and down. Snorting, as horses will, he waited until he was sure I was awake and then he backed away from me.
Sitting up, I looked him over. The only other white marking on him was a stocking on his right back leg.
This horse knew he was beautiful and wanted to let me know he thought so. Standing quietly for a few minutes, he let me admire every inch of him. Then he turned, raised his tail and pranced off. When he had taken a few steps, he disappeared.
The next morning after breakfast, while my brothers were off playing, my father asked me if I had seen anything unusual the night before. At the time, his questions did not seem unusual to me because he was always asking me questions about psychic things.
Telling him how I had been awakened, he asked me what the horse looked like. Upon relating what I saw, he informed me he had seen the same one swim out into the river, come back and disappear, some years before.
He told me the story he had heard about the place. A middle-aged man had lived alone with that horse. Thieves
